What Are The Vitamins My Body Needs?

Vitamins and minerals that we need to function on a day-to-day basis should come from the nutrient dense food we eat.  But what vitamins do we need for our bodies to work?

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is in many dairy products and yellow- or orange-coloured fruits and vegetables, such as mangos, melons, and apricots.  Vitamin A helps with our immune system, our eyesight, maintaining heart, lungs and kidney healthy, keeping our teeth and bones strong and helps to keep our skin healthy.

 

Vitamin B

Vitamin B is found in leafy green vegetables, such as broccoli and kale, animal proteins and whole grains.  Vitamin B helps with our brain function, metabolism, heart, our nervous system function and improves cholesterol by lowering bad cholesterol and increasing good cholesterol.

 

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is found in a lot of fruit and vegetables and helps support our immune system and strengthens our skin and teeth health.

 

Vitamin D

Besides getting vitamin D from sunlight, it is also found in cod liver oil and fatty fish.  Vitamin D is especially needed for bone and nerve health!

 

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an important vitamin for organ function, as its antioxidants benefits keep your immune system strong and also help with your circulation.  Vitamin E also helps to maintain muscle function and has been linked to reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

 

Vitamin K

Vitamin K is essential for blood clotting and plays a role with calcium to keep your bones and teeth healthy.  It also plays an important role in healing wounds.

 

Calcium

Calcium is a mineral needed for both healthy bones and teeth, and plays an important role in preventing osteoporosis.  Calcium is found in most dairy products, tofu, spinach and rhubarb.

 

Iron

Iron is found in in red meats and vegetables, especially leafy green vegetables. Iron is needed as it helps transport oxygen in our blood.
