My 2024 Guide: Healthy Things To Do In Winchester

As someone who loves exploring this charming city, I’ve put together a list of my favourite healthy activities.

From savouring delicious coffee at local cafes to enjoying scenic nature walks and engaging in various fitness pursuits, Winchester offers a load of options that I absolutely adore.

Whether you’re a foodie, a nature enthusiast, or a fitness buff, you’ll find plenty of healthy things to do in Winchester.

Coffee, Cafes and Food

There are many independents to see when it comes to food and good coffee in Winchester (being quite the coffee connoisseur myself). We are spoiled for choice.

Coffee Lab Academy: If you want to bag yourself a great coffee and get the home brewing gear yourself, Academy (formerly coffee lab) is the place to be.

The Orangery: Not leaving out The Orangery who serve Brunch, Coffee & Cocktails. As a bonus – they are dog friendly!

Hoxton Bakehouse: Hoxton Bakehouse have their own roasters and bakery. They provide excellent bread, cakes, coffee and sandwiches

Bento Factory: Bento Factory is simply Devine. Jo and Vinnie are magical. Their cookies, cakes and authentic food are to die for… ‘a little bit of everything’, we’d recommend the bao buns… even catering to those who need gluten free options (a special bonus for Andy) – (plus you can bring dogs!). It’s not easy to get fresh healthy food – but it’s easily accessible here.

The Dispensary Kitchen: The Dispensary Kitchen is the place to be for a burger. Regularly rotating craft beer, crazy cocktails and unlikely pairings in a burger. Once you’ve had pork and pineapple you will understand their culinary talents are to be bowed down to. A warming atmosphere with great food (plus you can bring dogs!)

Remedi Health: Remedi Health is a pharmacy which includes the capacity to test for intolerances and allergies, they have a nutritionist and sleep therapist. It’s a one stop shop should you need a hand, or want to be proactive before something becomes a problem. Their guidance around my allergies and dietary intolerances has been invaluable.

Cupboard of Health: Cupboard of Health is filled with food, supplements, soaps, deodorants and more. If there’s a natural product you are struggling to get ahold of, chances are they have it.

Kavi Coffee: Kavi Coffee is the last but not least mention of our long (and growing) coffee list. They are the new guys in town. As well as some great specialised coffee, they also offer breakfast, brunch, lunch and delicious cake/pastries selections using locally sourced ingredients.

Nature Walks

Winchester is surrounded by beautiful walks. Here are my top two:

The Itchen Loop: One of my favourite walks is the itchen loop. Starting down by bishop on the bridge you loop round, over fields, round St Catherine’s hill (or over if you fancy raising your heart rate!), crossing back through and down to St Cross and through the nature reserve, you end up by Winchester College and back into the centre of town. Great for a dog walk or summer stroll.

Farley Mount: Farley Mount is another favourite. The hilly terrain, Forrest and multiple loops make it a great place to take my dog. Never too busy and mostly fenced in, you can’t go far wrong. A very relaxing, decompressive place that my dog loves as well. Easy to go anywhere from 3-15km.

Cycling

Winchester and its surrounding areas offer picturesque cycling routes suitable for various skill levels.

South Downs Way: This iconic long-distance trail passes near Winchester and offers stunning views of the South Downs National Park. The route is ideal for mountain biking and more experienced cyclists looking for a challenging ride with rewarding vistas.

Itchen Navigation: Follow the peaceful towpath along the River Itchen on this family-friendly cycling route. The flat, traffic-free path is perfect for leisurely rides, and you can enjoy nature and wildlife along the way.

Test Way: The Test Way is a scenic cycling route that follows the course of the River Test. Starting from nearby Stockbridge, you can cycle through beautiful countryside and charming villages, enjoying the tranquil surroundings.

Clarendon Way: This off-road trail connects Winchester to Salisbury and is suitable for mountain biking or hybrid bikes. The route passes through woodlands and fields, offering a mix of challenging terrain and scenic beauty.

Walking Tours

Explore Winchester on foot with guided or self-guided walking tours.

Winchester Cathedral Tour: Discover the iconic Winchester Cathedral with a guided tour that delves into its history, architecture, and significance. Learn about notable figures buried here and explore the beautiful interior of this historic landmark.
